Will I need special video drivers For DOS, Windows: 3.1X, 9X, 2000, NT, ect.?
No special video drivers are required, simply connect it as you would a CRT monitor! Although StarPanel® monitors can synchronize to various frequencies, you may have to fine tune or calibrate the monitor to your particular system. StarPanel® recommends fine tuning the display to the display card by following the manual or contacting technical support for assistance when necessary.

What about non-PC video sources?
As long as the video signal parameters fall within the specifications for the particular monitor, the display should function properly. In general, if the display source can drive a crt monitor then the StarPanel® monitor should function as well. Take note that a poor signal source may appear worse on an LCD monitor than on a CRT monitor. This is due to the precise nature of the LCD display: a single pixel is a single dot on the display. If there is noise in the video source, the LCD may reveal this fact before a CRT. StarPanel® displays are used in several non-PC applications such as UNIX, embedded controllers of various manufacturers and others.

When should I calibrate? How often?
Normally, calibration need take place only once but, due to temperature and humidity variations, an application may require periodic calibration to fine tune the display to the video source. If the video signal characteristics change, then the monitor may need to be re-tuned to optimize performance. The initial calibration should be performed after the monitor has warmed-up (5-15 minutes).

What should I use to clean the screen with?
Mild soap or detergent and water can be used to clean the display. A 'mild' glass cleaner is also acceptable (diluted glass cleaner). Do not use abrasives, full strength glass cleaners or solvents.

Why does the monitor look good on one system but not another?
StarPanel® monitors may require some fine-tuning for optimum display performance. When moving a monitor from one video source to another, a slight adjustment may be necessary to achieve best performance on either video source. Parameters such as Vertical Sync frequency and signal level often vary between sources even though they may be the same model and manufacturer. StarPanel® monitors have adjustments for each video mode to help compensate for these differences. These adjustments are stored in non-volatile memory and recalled when the particular mode is detected.
Note: If you are comparing systems or monitors, make sure that each system is set to the same sync frequency or refresh rate and the same mode.

I have an old laptop and want to use the DB15HD output connector, will it work?
If it will drive a CRT monitor then it will drive a StarPanel® monitor. However, some older laptops have poorer performance on this output port. This is evident on CRT Monitors as well as LCD monitors. Newer laptops have much improved video circuitry and can deliver very good quality video signals on the output port as well as simultaneous display capability.

How far away can I place the video source away from the monitor?
Provided a good quality, shielded video cable is used, the video source can be as far as 100 feet from the monitor and provide a good quality display.

What about NTSC?
Although StarPanel® doesn't yet provide a built-in NTSC video input option on it's monitors, a NTSC to RGB converter can be purchased from other manufacturers.

What refresh rates work best?
A 60-hertz refresh rate will generally yield a good display image, but refresh rates up to 75 Hz are supported.

What's the difference between digital RGB and analog RGB?
Digital RGB is comprised of the Red, Green, Blue, Horizontal Sync, Vertical Sync, Data Clock, and Enable. Digital RGB signals are 0 to 5 Volts and are suitable to drive digital circuits. These signals are required to drive a LCD display panel. While conveniently produced at the "feature connector" of some adapter cards, digital RGB usually has a severe distance limitation (6 inches to 1 foot) unless special signal drivers and cable are employed. Digital RGB produced by some PC video cards require special software or video drivers to produce the correct signals for a given LCD panel.
Analog RGB is comprised of Red, Green, Blue, Horizontal Sync, and Vertical Sync. Analog RGB signals are usually 0.7 Volts PP. Analog RGB is the standard output from most computer video display cards and is available at the standard DB15HD style connector. Analog doesn't suffer from the same distance limitation as digital RGB. An LCD monitor accepting standard PC video signals as input requires no special drivers and can be placed much farther away from the source. Internally, the monitor's circuitry must produce the digital RGB that the LCD panel requires.

Why no passive color monitor?
The performance difference between an Active Matrix display and a Passive display far outpace the ever shrinking cost difference. Active Matrix displays have a wider viewing angle, more colors, faster refresh and in general outperform passive displays in all categories. For some time the cost difference between passive and active matrix displays has been decreasing and there is no sign of a change in that trend.

Why just the industrial flat screen touch monitor and not the entire computer system?
By choosing a StarPanel® industrial flat screen touch monitor you have the flexibility to use many different computer options like single board computer, brick type computers, desktop computers or a ruggedized computer. As well as a nearly unlimited choice of current and future system options relating to storage, I/O, power input, case size and cost to suggest a few. By having the operator interface (the industrial flat screen touch monitor) separate from the computer (open architecture) allows several other advantages. Like having the computer located in a more acceptable location in the equipment design due to its size, cabling, access requirements or operating environment. This open architecture allows that only the industrial flat screen touch monitor need be located in the harshest location, usually out at the operating position.

My monitor is dark, dimming over time, or has changed to a reddish hue.
The LCD's fluorescent back light tube (s) are most likely wearing out, or have burned out, as is normal after a long service life. A factory service replacement of these back light tube (s) is most likely needed. Contact StarPanel support to request an RMA number by phone or via our online RMA request form. Customer Service will contact you with the ship to address and instructions.

Auto calibration does not calibrate my monitor, or I'm having difficulty calibrating my monitor.
On rare occasions the Auto calibration function can not distinguish between different video resolutions or modes due to subtle timing differences in the video signal. When this occurs you may need to manually calibrate the monitor.
